Volume 2 is for Soprano and Alto recorders, though a Tenor recorder can be used by dropping certain Alto passages down the octave. Each duet is 3 pages, so I’ve included an extra loose folio containing the third pages, to avoid impossible page turns.
“Carefree Afternoon” is a fluffy dollop of spun sugar. No effort whatsoever should be apparent when playing this duet, it should sound just like its title suggests. The swing style is almost triplet in nature, but not mechanical or too extreme.
“Broken Heirlooms” is a klezmer-style dialogue that alternates between desolate bereavement and resigned endurance. The loss of such treasured keepsakes is nearly impossible to withstand, but one must be strong and carry on with life. Plus, it’s fun to see which player can wail more convincingly; I have simply provided suggestions to get you started.
“Country Canzona” views a Renaissance / early Baroque European musical form through a mountain bluegrass lens. Enjoy adding more grace notes and slides, for a “down-home fiddles” effect.
Charles Fischer of Unicorn Music commissioned this set of 24 duets for recorders, in 8 volumes grouped by instrument combination. Their difficulty levels are generally suitable for intermediate players, though advanced players will find them enjoyable and challenging as well. As in all my music, tasteful ornamentation beyond what is notated is welcome and encouraged.
