After 50 years of teaching, Manfred Harras-Donzé is taking part-time retirement from the IAM (Internationaler Arbeitskreis für Musik). For the occasion of his last summer course, he commissioned this new work (as well as Raphael Benjamin Meyer's Cadenza Finale (Basilisk Edition, RM50) for a class focused on these larger instruments. In 2020 he also commissioned my Raclette for the same TTTBBB instruments.
Featuring the uncommon instrumentation of 3 Tenor and 3 Bass recorders (Tenor 1 also fits on Alto), the piece is a riff on the popular entrada music of the 17th century, perhaps as music playing when the noble guests are arriving at a royal banquet, tournament, or any gathering that could use some additional majesty. It is also easy to imagine the "Intrada" music playing at a theater production before the curtain opens, and the "Outrada" playing at the final curtain. In between is a brief dance movement in triple time named "Tripla", perhaps to be played during intermission.
The Intrada-Outrada would also sound well with a Renaissance "loud" consort of cornettos, curtals, dulcians or sackbuts.
