First movement, "Barwinism" conducted by the composer in San Jose, CA in April 2017:
Second movement, "Gray Day, but Good Coffee" conducted by Tom Beets at Open Recorder Days Amsterdam October 2019 competition finals:
“Craft Brew” was commissioned in 2016 by the Recorder Orchestra of Oregon directed by Laura Kuhlman. The first movement “Barwinism” is named after a fun slang phrase I found online that allegedly refers to the survival of the fittest when competing for the bartender’s attention. Modeled after the opera overtures of the Baroque period, it begins as a drinking song and segues into a fugal episode full of thematic development before returning to the opening material. A final dance-like coda keeps the party going.
The second movement, “Gray Day, but Good Coffee” celebrates the famously drizzly weather of Portland and portrays a rainstorm that develops from a few drops to a full downpour. Flutter-tonguing technique adds to the stormy texture, and the constantly descending chromatic lines remind us that it’s raining and we’re all bored and a bit irritable. Throughout this movement it’s important to maintain a dreary mood, punctuated by listless “ho-hum” gestures shared by the entire orchestra. These gestures are the core of the movement’s apathetic affect and deserve special attention. The mood perks up after a double shot of excellent espresso, discarding the lethargy and getting a bit manic to the end.
